YES! ONE GOAL DOWN!

How I learn to dance sopa de carracol like my grandmother.
This is my grandmother Lupe

On September 10, 2008 I learn to dance sopa de carracol like my grandmother. It took 3 to 4 days of practice to dance the way I did in this video. It took so long since I had to continue stopping over and over again. I constantly stopped because as I was dancing my right foot was being rubbed on the floor. It does not sound painful but the true is that it really burned. Also while my right foot was being rubbed against the floor, my left was guiding the way of my dancing. It is really hard to keep your balance. It was fun but I think I would not do it again because of the pain.

Lashanda Jackson (slave narrative)

Location: Louisiana
Slave age: 98
Interviewer’s name: Lupe Melendez

I is just doing this cause I is wanting to tell me people how we darkies was treated back in the ole days. It all started in the day I is sold to ole man Tomas and I was separated from me ma and fourteen brothers and sisters. He was the meanest mans that ever walked this earth. He beat me and all the other darkies like drums, like he had no feelings at all. Everyday we work in the fields pickin’ cotton for no pay. One day I stop to take me a breath because pickin’ cotton was no easy deal for us slaves and ole man Thomas was just looking at me like never before he called out me name and I think me heart stopped. He said “come over here nigger”. Then he grab me by me neck and hair, and tied me to his horses and it pulled me crossed the bumpy field. My stomach was bleedin’ like never before. Then he would whip me by tying me to a tree for no reason just for fun. I is never ables to used me hands like I is suppose to. I been wishing of the day I could be freed then nobody could hurt me. One day ole man Thomas started looking funny, sick and weak. Then one hopeful day, two weeks later he died and all us darkies was free. Nobody telling us what to do and no more hurtin’. As time past I named myself Lashanda Jackson after my mother and grand father.

What I Value The Most.

I value my family the most because they are understanding, fun, and creative in many ways. One way that my family is understanding, is if you do mistakes they will correct you but show you how to do it right. They understand because they have made mistakes before, and sometimes the one you have done. I can tell them anything and they will not make you feel bad or laugh at me.
My family is fun because for every holiday we get together to celebrate with delicious foods, games and laughter. Some of the foods we eat are: white rice, red beans and pork chops. My favorite game in parties is musical chairs. We also laugh about thing we use to do.
My family is also very creative because we like to design, do craft, and arts. My family likes to design rooms. They also like to do crafts and arts. Some of the crafts and arts they do are key chains and bracelets. Most of the arts and crafts we do involve materials from the stores
Michaels and Hobby Lobby.
